Do you see my face – have you glimpsed my form?
Do you know the love I feel for children in the storm?
Have you looked upon a tree? have you seen the stars?
Have you read the longing cry of even your own heart?
You say you do not see me, you say you’ve never heard;
I’ve spoken from the dawn of time and given you this Word.
Do you smell the flowers? have you touched the grass?
Have you ever run your hand over cool and solid brass?
Has pain, and sorrow pierced your heart for longings you don’t know?
Have you awoken in the night and found from even darkness: glow?
You say you do not know me, that you cannot see my face.
But I, my love, am everywhere, my song will ever leave its trace.
My words are not away from you, nor foreign to your ears,
I am found in children’s sounds, and in an old man’s tears.
WHO AM I? The riddle of the ages!
WHO AM I? Your souls are trapped in cages!
Who am I, who from dawn to evening calls?
Who am I, whom even darkness never stalls?
I AM.
Do you think you do not hear me? Can you claim you don’t?
You have heard me from your birth, I AM the language of all men.
‘God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;’
Hebrews 1:1-2
