3 But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost:
4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. (2 Cor. 4:4)
The god of this world has blinded the minds of men; Satan’s spider webs of iniquity have become the garments laid upon the hearts of men. The word declares that he has blinded the minds of men to the gospel. But wherein has he blinded men? How could all the world be blinded by him? What vail could he succesfully put over the minds of men that would hide from us the light of truth?
Jesus declared of Satan that …He was a murderer From the begining, and abode not in the truth, because here was no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar and the father of it. (John 8:44b)
Satan is the father of lies; he was also a murderer from the begining of time. His goal has always been to kill man.
Notice that Jesus ties together Satan’s murderous nature with his nature of being filled with lies. Satan is a spirit (Ephesians 6:12), he is not a man with a body who can lay hands on another man and kill them, as Cain did. Why does Jesus tie together the murderous nature of Satan with his deceptive nature? Satan uses lies to kill.
Just as Jesus declared Satan was a murderer from the begining, in the begining Satan sought to kill man in the garden. God had told not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for in the day he ate of it, he would surely die (Gen 2:15-17).
Why did Satan come to decieve man into eating the fruit? Because he was a murderer from the begining; he wanted man dead and the one way to do it – he knew by the very word of God – was to trick him into eating the fruit.
Satan lied outright, and his deception in the garden still blinds the minds of all men so that they are trapped in the snare of death. As it is declared: the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…
What, then, is the deception that all mankind believes? What is that lie that darkens the hearts of all men?
Let’s look at the first lie Satan told mankind, and break it down:
Genesis 3:4 & 5
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
Satan starts with this: ‘YE SHALL NOT SURELY DIE.’ This is, of course a direct contradiction of what God said – that man would surely die. In this Satan wants to remove from us the fear of death. But what is his motivation? ‘He was a murderer from the begining…’
Satan wants us to burn in the lake of fire; his motivation is that we spend eternity in the torment of the second death (the lake of fire). Was this God’s will for us? No! This is what Satan – the murderer – wants. So the murderer says we will not die if we sin against God. Is that reassuring? The murderer telling you that you won’t die?
This is the begining of the lie that all men believe; we think we are secure, that a loving God would never cast us into hell just because we’ve ignored a few of His commands. We agree with this lie: ‘I’m a good person, God won’t send me to hell.’
But God spoke to us not a threat, but a warning: in the day we disobey His word – He Who is perfectly honest, holy and righteous – we would die. God’s word is clear, the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), God tells us this because He wants us to live happily with Him for eternity: that we might fear God and depart from evil. But we believe the murderer who said that our sin would not see us dead.
That is the begining of the lie, but not the end of it. The sepent continued, declaring that when we disobey God, we will be enlightened, and become LIKE GOD OURSELVES. Wow! The murderer promises us far more than that we won’t die! Not only will we not die, but we, ourselves will be like God who created us. We get to choose; we get to make the commands; we can live wholly indipendant of our Creator.
We have no need to be saved from our sins, we won’t go to hell. We have no need to even be in fellowship with He who created us – who made us for everlasting life – because we are our own gods.
Now we have a free ticket to do whatever we want, and we won’t die for it no matter how evil it is. What wonderful liberty.
Wy would we want to believe the Gospel? Why woukd we want to believe this Jesus fellow? We’re doing just fine as our own gods, and its not like we’ll end up in hell, or anything…
If you have not trusted in Christ it is because all mankind is blinded with this deception. You are in grave danger of hell; God does not want to send you there, and He has sent His own Son to be the sacrifice for sin in your behalf so that you can Truly live forever through fellowship with your Creator.
Romans 6:23 reads this way in full:
For the wages of sin IS death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
A murderer has stolen the Truth from us that he may see us all in hell, punished for disobeying the righteous. Yet God’s Word is True, and Jesus declared:
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)
Free from what? Free from the lie of the murderer; free from eternal death in the lake of fire.
Trust in Jesus Christ, friend. He is the Truth that will make you free.
